Super sharp bonsai clippers. I use them for my Chinese elm but also for deadheading my garden roses. No issue with cutting but obviously not meant for thick branches – you use these for soft new growth or thin branches of a bonsai. The Japanese Yasugi steel blades stay sharp and the lightweight handles make them comfortable for longer sessions. These scissors are reasonably priced (at £24.99 right now) and do a good job trimming right up against the plant stem. The size makes them comfortable to hold, and the overall length is not too much more than a standard Sharpie marker. They aren't very thick either and easy to store. More importantly, they cut easily being sharper than they look (see my video!) I find them easy and intuitive to use, and they are not heavy. The build quality makes me think they will last a very long time if looked after properly. I have tidied these scissors with camellia oil which I use for garden tools, and never leave anything wet after use! It is worth noting the nut and bolt cannot be adjusted which is a drawback for me, but not too significant. These scissors are made in Japan, so the "real deal". I would recommend them!

Initially, I was disappointed to see these bonsai scissors wrapped in plastic within a secure blister pack - not very eco-friendly, I thought - until I realised how sharp they were! As someone who is elderly, and a couple of years back nearly sliced off the top of my index finger with secateurs(!), the super-sharp blades of these Samurai Bonsai Scissors do worry me; after all, Yasugi steel was traditionally used to make katana swords!  I would have preferred it if they had come with a protective cover for the tip of the blades, as you get with some loppers - and with hairdressing scissors. I will definitely need to find a safe place to store them, and to treat them with extreme caution when using them.Aesthetically though, they're rather beautiful, with their large loop handles. I found the handles took a bit of getting used to, as they're so roomy, and at first seemed too big for my hands, but once I got the hang of them, I found I could position my fingers to make more careful, accurate cuts. It's also handy that they're suitable for both right and left-handed users. The pointed tips to the blades make it easier to get in close to delicate foliage, unlike a pair of secateurs, and I'm finding them great for trimming houseplants. They feel reassuringly solid, while still being lightweight and comfortable to use, and with their heavy duty, rust-resistant steel bolt, they're not going to fall apart in a hurry!When I ordered these bonsai scissors three weeks ago, they cost £34.99, which seemed quite steep, but they're now down to £24.99. Given that they're hand-forged, and with a lifetime warranty offered, this seems quite reasonable - and I would be tempted to order more as presents for gardening friends.

They feel like a quality tool rather than something that will need replacing after a season or two.I also found them surprisingly comfortable to use. The large traditional loop handles might look a little unusual if you're used to standard garden secateurs, but they work brilliantly for this sort of detailed pruning. They give me plenty of control over the position of my fingers, making it easier to make careful, accurate cuts without my hand feeling cramped. Because the handles are nice and roomy, I found it easy to adjust my grip naturally while working around different branches and stems.Another thing I appreciated is how lightweight yet solid they are. That makes a real difference if I'm spending a while shaping plants, as they never started to feel tiring in my hand. If I'm investing time into looking after bonsai or other delicate plants, I want tools that are a pleasure to use, and these certainly fit that description.

Very chunky and solid. Heavy, but in a good way, as each bade appears to be a one piece iron chunk. They arrived well oiled, and I suspect they would be best lightly oiled after use, to prevent rusting.As with all Japanese blades, these cut very well, and would be suitable for trimming cut flowers, or a bit of deadheading in the garden, as well as for their intended use. They have the advantage of being essentially non-handed, so suitable for left or right hand use. The hand loops are big enough for those of us with bigger hands, as well as when wearing gloves.They are not secateurs, they are scissors, but are nonetheless very effective on thin stems. (They work well on cardboard, but not so well on paper - I was impatient to try them, so used them on the packaging.. )I really like these. The only downside I can see is that it is possible to pinch your hand between the handles, however the handle loops are big enough this shouldn't happen in normal use, and it hasn't happened to me.

I have a few pruning tools already, but often find that the cheaper ones don’t last very long or mangle delicate stems rather than cutting them cleanly. I was intrigued by the design of these Bonsai scissors as they are totally different to any of my other various scissors and secateurs. When first picking them up I immediately noticed the weight of them, which is more substantial than I’m used to with plastic and wooden tools. In fact the weight is beautifully balanced due to the design and they feel very comfortable to use for longer periods. Unlike my other scissors, the handles on these are long enough to easily fit all my fingers through. This gives me a lot more control and as the blades are so close to the handle I was able to cut with greater precision. They come with a lifetime guarantee and are certainly a longer term investment than a standard pair of garden scissors. The quality of the workmanship and materials is very evident though and I do think the admittedly high price of £34.99 is entirely justified.

£35 for a pair of scissors I hear you scream!!? Well, you would be a little inaccurate. Because these are a very beautiful pair of very sharp, very specialised Bonsai scissors.First up, these bonsai scissors by Kimura at point of use cut absolutely superbly. I have used so far on a flowery bush that needed pruning and one of my potted trees. It feels so good in the hand. Particularly enjoy the rounded shape of the handles. Feels so smooth.There is a nice balance and palpable weight to these which means when an annoying woody knot comes along....as long as it's not very big....it has no chance. The cut is so beautiful and smooth. Really love using these.You can see and feel that these bonsai scissors have been designed and made really well and the experience at use is great.They come packaged securely in plastic with all Japanese instructions unfortunately. That does of course help big up the items authenticity, but doesn't really help you if you want to care long term for this lovely pruning tool.The metal is very heavy but smooth and should not rust, but I would sharpen these regularly with a sharpening stone and polish with some kind of suitable oil.Included is a lifetime warranty which is fantastic.The advert says these are 'built from durable steel with a heavy-duty rust-resistant bolt, these bonsai scissors are designed to withstand years of regular use.'Each time you hold them you can really believeit.Fantastic product.Highly recommend to all prolific pruners.

These are forged 180mm satsuki shears with a laminated soft steel and Hitachi Yasugi steel construction for edge retention. The blades are intended to be sharpened and maintained over time, and they can be dismantled easily with the centre screw, which makes them a proper gardening tool intended to last for decades, if cared for. The exact Yasugi grade isn’t stated, which is a shame, but it certainly holds an edge well from my use so far.In terms of use, I’ve been trying these for several days now. Although I don’t do bonsai, I do a fair bit of gardening, indoor and out, and I’ve been testing these on pruning jobs. These Bonsai shears are totally impressive!Being made in Japan they are the genuine article, albeit China introduced the craft to Japan in medieval times. The design is superior, the Yasugi Steel blades are hand forged and the length of the shears at 185mm is dimensionally in proportion with the handles and blade length.The profile of the shears is most aesthetic, and the weight of only 100g makes the shears very portable. The 2 forged handles are attached together with a heavy-duty rust resistant nut and bolt to prevent loosening.It came as no surprise to me that the manufacturing quality of the shears was excellent, with tight, smooth opening and closing of the blades.In use, the handles are pleasingly ergonomic and comfortable to use. The theory of bending moments has been applied to the pivot point to ensure ease of use, even for older fingers like mine! The stem length and pointed blade tips facilitate precision focus on the flowers, buds, shoots, leaves and small branches up to 5mm thick. Needless to say, the blades are impressively sharp!I have used the shears very effectively in the garden, accurately thinning out foliage. They are a pleasure to use, comfortable and exertion-free, and whilst the price of £34.99 may be on the expensive side, given the quality of design, manufacture and overall functionality, I consider the Bonsai shears to be good value for money and recommend!

I had never worked out a way to hold this style of wide loop handle style pruners before now. I persevered with these and eventually found a comfortable hold.A well made pair of snips. These have a stylish traditional design. Lightweight with Japanese steel blades.The way you hold these pruners is slightly different to standard snips, scissors or secateurs. You rest your thumb along one of the loops rather than fold your thumb through. Once familiar with the grip they’re comfortable to use, well balanced, light enough in weight to use for extended periods and a pleasure to cut with.They make good clean sharp cuts and have that satisfying sound you hear when you know you’ve got a good pair of shears.These apparently come with a lifetime guarantee. It doesn’t surprise me. They look and feel like they’d last a lifetime.

These scissors are absolutely amazing. They’re incredibly well made and the forging is a work of art. They have applications far beyond bonsai and I’ve been keeping them in the pocket of my apron while I’m in my workshop: I’ve lost count of how many times I use them in a day. I’ve made a small leather sheath to cover the point to avoid getting a shock when I forget about them being thereThey’re extremely sharp straight out of the pack: the entire length of the blade is super sharp so they can be used for making the tiniest snips in your material or lopping off surprisingly thick branches.The ergonomics of them are perfect for me. I have quite large hands and I find them so easy to hold and use. As you use your entire hand to grip them you can also bring a lot more pressure to bear than with regular scissors.They’re absolutely indispensable to me and I can’t recommend them highly enough.

The finger loops are also generously sized, making them comfortable to use even if you have larger hands or you're wearing gardening gloves.It's worth remembering that these are scissors rather than secateurs, but they're surprisingly capable on thinner stems. Out of curiosity, I also tried them on the cardboard packaging they arrived in, and they handled that with ease. Paper, however, isn't really their strong point!Overall, I'm really pleased with them. The only minor drawback is that it's possible to pinch your hand between the handles, but thanks to the large finger loops it doesn't seem likely during normal use.
